Finding your way around
Sorrento is easy...
... with a little help from your friends. The centre of town
is Piazza Tasso, named after Torquato Tasso, a 16th century Italian poet who was
born in Sorrento.
Today, as far as tourists are concerned, Piazza Tasso means bars,
espresso and scooters, but it is a good place to use as a focus for
directions.
For us though, Piazza Tasso is a bit too busy and probably a bit too false,
we prefer Piazza Lauro. It's actually much more modern, but it's also very
relaxed, very Italian and when you sit at a cafe with either a coffee, water or
a beer, you get to see real Italian people relaxing - which usually means with a
cigarette, a mobile phone, or a scooter - or even all three at the same time.
From at either side of Piazza Tasso is the Corso Italia,
the main shopping street that also is home to a number of hotels, restaurants,
cafe's and English style pubs.
Don't let that put you off straight away, because the
Sorrentinas do English pubs in their own very unique way - yes, they'll serve
you a pint of beer and a plate of chips, but that's offered alongside pizza,
pasta, Italian coffees and wine - you could never think that you were back in
dear old blighty.
Then there are the two marina's,
Marina Grande - the old fishing marina that still works today ad has a real
charm about it, and
Marina Piccola which is busy with tourists and locals ferrying between
Capri, Ischia, Amalfi and Naples
