Food and Drink...
If you're into pizza, pasta or seafood, you'll think that you've died and
gone to heaven when you get to Sorrento!
Throughout the day there are hundreds of places to sit outside
and watch the world go by as you eat your pizza, cooked in a real wood burning
oven - no Pizza Hut here! If pizza is the food of Sorrento (it's said to come
from neighbouring Naples originally), then judging by the number of places that
you can buy it from, the drink of Sorrento has to be Limoncello.
If you've
never seen or tasted Limoncello, you're in for a real treat. The locals consider
it to be an aid to digestion, so many places that you go to eat will give you a
free glass of ice cold Limoncello at the end of your meal.
Like
so many other holiday resorts around the world, Sorrento has thousands of cafes,
bars and restaurants selling everything from a toasted sandwich with ham and
mozzarella, through to a full blown five course lunch that will take you three
hours to eat!
What you don't find is MacDonald's, Burger
King or KFC, and in fact there are very few places that sell anything other than
Italian food, although most places will serve an omelette and a plate of fries if
you're feeling homesick!
For seafood, I like La Fenicé. It's straight
facing a fishmongers, and you always get the freshest fish, but reading the menu
is a waste of time. Almost every time I've been into La Fenicé, we read the
menu, make our choice and then the waiter says 'No, you don't want this, I get
you the fresh fish of the day' - then they bring you three fabulous courses,
that all taste wonderful - but not what you asked for.
For a salad or a small snack, try The
Foreigners Bar. I hate the name of the place, but it has the best views over the
Bay, good service and the prices are good too. They also have live entertainment
in the evening, and you'll also find tourist information there if you need any
help. |
